Status of woman in 21st entury India????
India has entered 21st
century with bang. We hear so much about Woman power, equal rights, equal opportunities
in jobs, education. Women today hold challenging
assignments in police, army, fire brigade, air force, pilots.
But when you travel across length of India
and see middle class families which constitute almost 65 % of India’s
population, we find nothing much has changed.
In fact, woman in house is opposed by
another woman in house.
It reminds me of one real life
incidence.A girl grown up in typical south Indian,
conservative family comes to Mumbai after marriage after spending 22 years in closely knit
family protected by parents , where she is not allowed to go out alone in
evening, not to board auto rickshaw alone, college is only pastime till
marriage is fixed. After marriage, her life in Mumbai was
like some unknown planet for her. But she
adjusted herself with pace of the city , and soon gained self confidence , started doing smoothly all the daily chores with great confidence. With this new empowerment and new understanding of gender and feminism , she started
comparing her previous life, the way people in her mother’s place ,particularly
ladies, think and behave. After her father’s death behavior of her aunts, sister-in laws towards her mother changed completely.
How can a women be enemy of another women?
It is disgusting to see ,the widow is
not supposed to do Pooja .One must not
see widow’s face early morning as it is considered to be bad omen. She should
not wear red and green colour sarees , which she has worn all these years ?
Who has formulated all these norms? Why
there are no such norms for Men?
And the mockery is that these norms are
framed and enforced by women only. It is a pity to see the educated, working
women who have learned science in school and Colleges also succumb to such
foolish rituals.
How can we talk about our exploitation as female sex when we ourselves are not united < We talk men treats us secondary but we women do not leave a single opportunity to oppress another vulnerable woman , Before we shout about equality , and fingers others , its our turn first to get united , make a powerful team , make a powerful union , then and only then change is possible .
